Dementia Care

Dementia is a group of symptoms whose characteristics traits include memory and language difficulties, a decrease in problem solving capabilities, and decline in cognitive functioning(the include learning, memorizing, problem solving, decision making and attention. As you can probably imagine, a loss of functional capacity in any one of these areas can be debilitating let alone having to suffer a loss of function in all of these areas. This is the reason why so many of our aging folk in Malaysia with symptoms of dementia struggle to carry our even the more basic and mundane daily activities.

There is no available treatment currently available that is able to cure or alter the course of the disease progression. Having said that however, there's a lot that can be done to improve the quality of life.

In Genesis, our goal in providing care to those with dementia are as follows:

  1. Optimizing the amount a physical activity that a client with dementia receives. This is generally done through structured group play and exercise activities and more focused 1-on-1 time. Delivery of these activities are generally done by our resident dementia care coordinator.

  2. Structured cognitive exercises that focus on facilitating cognitive exercises.

  3. The natural progression of dementia is such that it sometimes results in challenging behavioral and psychological symptoms. Our work in this area focuses on detecting these traits early and addressing them. This is an area that our visiting Geriatric Psychiatrist, Prof. Andrew C.K Law(see Prof. Andrew's profile here) spends much of his time tackling.

The challenge with managing patients with dementia care lies in the fact that it requires the participation of a multi-disciplinary team of experts that are specially trained in the provision of support and care within these 3 pillars as outlined above. It is for this reason that we are meticulous in assessing all of the dementia patients that are seeking to be enrolled into our centre. We include the input of our dementia care experts in proposing a care management plan for all our dementia clients. This way, we are better equipped in underlining their primary needs from the out-set, which then allows us to better advise our clients and their family members on what to expect when enrolled into out programme.

The goal in our old folks home is to become the referred standard for dementia care in Malaysia specifically because we see tremendous opportunity to make an impact in the lives of the clients and their family members while at the same time developing a world-leading service within this space.
